The town of Bad Urach was originally called "Urach" and was, according to the oldest available records, most likely first settled in the early Stone Age. It has a long rich history in the region. The local castle, Hohen Urach, was built around 1025 AD and the town was also the seat of the famous Graf Eberhard "with a Beard". Graf Eberhard was famous for his leadership and role in establishing the nearby University of Tuebingen (one of the eleven oldest in Europe). In 1985, the name was changed to BAD URACH, BAD meaning "bath" or "spa" to reflect the towns hot springs spa and making Bad Urach a member of the German Spa town "community."
